Gold can be found around our necks, fingers, and wrists, and even in our smartphones, but do we really know where it comes from? Under Blaise Compaore’s leadership, Burkina Faso’s unregulated gold rush has had a devastating effect on the lives of miners. Millions of people, including children as young as fourteen, mine in dangerous artisanal sites for a few golden grams of hope. In Gold Dust, we meet Marcel and Soumaele, two teenage gold miners, and Soungalgo, a teacher who fears for their future.
